4

By road from Kargil to Padum by car, overnight in a hotel.

5
From Padum, to the monastery of Zongkul, almost 7 hours of hiking to reach the monastery.  The route follows the Stod river upto the village of Alting (3600m) and then enters the valley of Zongka.  The monastery we find there was founded by the wise Naropa in the 11th century.
6
From the monastery of Zongkul to the base camp of Umasi La in 6 to 7 hours.  From Zongkul the trek passes by Mulung Tokopo, using a natural stone bridge which crosses a river, enters a valley with many stone boulders making the passage difficult.  Finally it reaches a grassy terrace that marks the campsite.
7
From the base camp to the upper camp, in 7 hours.  The Umasi La rises to 5340m.  Once we have crossed the pass, we have magnificent views of the Himalayas Kishtwar.
8
From the upper camp to Suncham in 8 hours.  This demanding stage offers a descent by way of the glacier and splendid views of the peak of Kishtwas Shivling.  The overnight camp is in the surroundings of the Suncham range.
9
From Suncham to Marchel (a 3 hour hike).  This short stage allows exploration of the Buddhist villages in the higher areas of the Padar valley, as well as engaging sherpas for the rest of the trek.
10
From Marchel to Atholi/Gularbagh (an 8 hour hike).  This stage notably crosses the villages of Shashut (2600m) and Gularbagh.  The latter has a very nice small bazaar.  Atholi is a town with schools and a police station.
11
From Atholi to Shoal (a 2 to 3 hour hike).  Again this stage can be shortened by following the road in construction in the Chenab valley to Shoal (2400m).
12
From Shoal to Istahari (a 6 to 7 hour hike).  This stage crosses the small village of Tahri.  Istahari is the last village of the sate of Jammu and Kashmir before crossing into Himachal Pradesch.  Here one can see the Shopu Dhar line that marks the border.
13
From Istahari to Kilar (a 7 hour hike)   Overnight in the hotel.
14
From Kilar to Manali by jeep.  Overnight in the hotel.
